About Me

Hi — I’m Emeil Stewart, a current medical student at the University of Miami. I created this blog to share my journey through medicine as someone who didn’t come from a typical background.

I grew up in the foster care system in Florida, entering before I was one year old and moving through more than 18 placements by the time I aged out. Growing up without stability or a support system presented real challenges — but it also taught me how to adapt, problem-solve, and keep moving forward.

Education became the first thing I could really own. I went on to earn a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences (Neuroscience track) from UCF, followed by a Master’s in Neuroscience, where I had interests in how diet impacts neurological diseases and brain-machine interfaces hoping to create improvements in people’s quality of life. I’m now pursuing my M.D. and exploring ways to contribute to research and care for underserved communities.

The goal of this blog is not to present a finished product, but to document the process of building a career in real time, sharing strategies for students from foster care and other non-traditional backgrounds. Whether I’m reflecting on setbacks or sharing strategies that helped me get here, my goal is to make this space useful, honest, and human.
